Building Kary Dental
A few months ago, the suite at 7700 Wisconsin Avenue was still the old Bethesda Smiles office. Now it is a different practice entirely: new name, new doctor, new equipment, and a remodel. New equipment has been installed, including a cone-beam CT (CBCT) scanner, intraoral scanner, a zirconia milling system, a 3D printer, dental laser, and nitrous oxide system. Here is how it came together and why it looks the way it does.
The space
The suite is 1,572 square feet, which is not large for a dental office. That constraint forced every decision to earn its square footage. The sterilization area follows a one-direction dirty-to-clean workflow so instruments never cross paths with clean ones coming back. The CBCT room doubles as a technology hub where patients can see their CBCT scans on-screen, and watch their crowns be milled from solid zirconia. In the lobby, patients are offered fresh-ground espresso, cappuccinos and lattes (regular or decaf), sparkling water, and tea.
The equipment
I have been working with CAD software and digital fabrication tools since 2007, first as an engineer, and now as a dentist. The equipment in this office is not decorative. It is how I practice.
The DEXIS OP 3D EX cone-beam CT scanner produces three-dimensional images of teeth, bone, sinuses, airway, and TMJ. Every implant case, and every root canal consultation starts with one of these scans. Unlike a typical 2D x-ray, it allows us to map and measure your anatomy in three dimensions,.
The Perfit Ovis mill sits in the open, visible from the hallway. Patients will see a crown being shaped from a solid block of zirconia. That is intentional. I want people to see how their care is made. The milling step is just one stage: after the restoration is milled, it gets stained and glazed for color, sintered at high temperature, adjusted for fit, and polished before it goes in your mouth. Most of this happens while you wait.
The dental chairs have built-in heat and massage. That is not a selling point. It is what modern dental chairs do, and it matters during a long appointment.
The lasers handle soft tissue work with less bleeding and faster healing than a scalpel. The Medit i900C intraoral scanner replaces the goopy impression trays that nobody misses.
Why independent
Kary Dental has no outside investors, no corporate affiliation, and no franchise. I funded the buildout personally. That is not a flex. It is a structural decision. No one is pressuring me to hit a production number or recommend treatment that serves a balance sheet instead of a patient.
When I hire associates down the road, they will not have production bonuses either. The incentive structure is the product. If I cannot build a practice where honest recommendations are also good business, the model does not work. I think it works.
What is next
We are opening in April 2026. The schedule starts at three days a week: Friday and Saturday. Insurance credentialing is ongoing, with several major PPOs confirmed and more in the pipeline.
