Inlays and onlays are conservative restorations for teeth with damage too extensive for a regular filling but not severe enough to need a full crown. They repair only the damaged portion of the tooth, preserving more of your healthy natural structure while restoring strength, function, and appearance. In many cases, we can design, mill, and place your restoration in a single visit.
Fillings are shaped directly in the tooth and work well for small cavities. Inlays and onlays are fabricated outside the mouth to replace larger areas of lost tooth structure, then bonded into place, giving greater durability and a better seal against future decay. Compared with a crown, which covers the entire visible tooth, an inlay or onlay is more conservative and keeps healthy enamel and dentin intact.
They are especially well suited to molars and premolars that take heavy chewing forces, where a standard filling may fail early but a crown would remove more healthy tooth than necessary.
Modern inlays and onlays are made from high-quality ceramics or zirconia, biocompatible, stain-resistant materials that closely match natural tooth color. Zirconia is prized for strength and longevity, while ceramic offers a slightly more translucent, natural look. We help you choose based on the tooth’s location, the extent of damage, your bite, and your cosmetic goals.
Instead of traditional impressions, an intraoral scanner captures a precise 3D image of the prepared tooth and your bite. The restoration is designed with CAD/CAM software and, in many cases, milled on-site using our Perfit Ovis zirconia mill. Because the whole workflow is digital, scan, design, mill, finish, treatment can often be completed in one visit, with no temporary and no second appointment.
After an exam and a discussion of your options, the tooth is prepared under local anesthesia, removing decay or old restorative material while preserving as much healthy structure as possible. A digital scan is taken, the restoration is milled, and it is then bonded to the tooth with precise adhesive techniques. We check the fit, adjust the bite, and polish the margins for a smooth, natural transition.
Aftercare is simple:
Properly designed and bonded, inlays and onlays can provide many years of reliable service and are less prone to wear and leakage than large direct fillings. Regular checkups let us monitor the restoration’s margins, watch for recurrent decay, and keep the surrounding gum tissue healthy.
If you clench or grind your teeth, a night guard can reduce stress on both your restorations and your natural teeth, helping your inlay or onlay last as long as possible.
